People and Clients often ask me, “What is the best diet? Is it low-carb, low-fat, low glycemic index etc etc.” My answer is always the same…The best diet is the one that is SUSTAINABLE.The one that fits with your lifestyle, your eating habits, your workout habits, and YOU!! Every person is different and their diet and training should take this into account. Some people tolerate carbohydrates better than others, that is why there isn’t a cookie cutter diet that works the same for everyone. If you write a diet for someone that you know they won’t be able to follow then it’s not an effective diet, regardless of how “good” the diet technically is.
I have written countless diets for all different types of people with different types of goals. But regardless of the person or their goals, the diet must be conducive to the individual and their life. Because the best diet in the world won’t do any good if you can’t follow it with consistency. Eating healthy is a lifestyle, not a quick scheme.
Here is a great example from a recent client of mine. Client “x” came to me at about 255lbs looking to change his life and get back into shape. His major problem was that he had a very hectic work schedule where he often ate fast food on the run and didn’t have time for breakfast. He had tried plenty of diets, ones he developed and some even from nutritionists, but failed each time. For example, the nutritionist would push the 6-8 small meals a day (not necessary and clearly doesn’t fit well with this lifestyle).
I sat down with client “x” for about an hour to determine his food preferences, lifestyle, past diet failures and successes etc. Once I gathered all the information specific to HIM, I wrote the diet. In the diet I also included 20 healthy meals that he could use. This helps the person learn to cook food that can be healthy and taste good. After 3 months (I trained him as well) he lost around 50lbs (was now 205lbs), the lowest since high school, and was a completely different person. He didn’t eat 6 times a day, he wasn’t a slave to his kitchen, he had planned cheat meals and he learned how to maintain his weight loss by using a diet that was SUSTAINABLE.
Regardless of your goals, if you want to lose weight you need a well thought out plan. Here at New York Sports Center we write diets for figure/bodybuilding competitors, athletes and sedentary people looking to change their physique. Achieving the physique you want is not rocket science but it does require you to be consistent and to do things that you probably haven’t done before.
